  • Kavcnik homestead at Zavodnje – Kavcnikova domacija (7-km walk, 3 hours):
It features a well-preserved smokehouse, the most southern example of this kind in the European Alpine area and probably more than 400 years old. It is a Slovenian cultural monument and a gem for lovers of rural architecture. The trail passes by the Zdovc homestead, birthplace of the sculptor Ivan Napotnik. We recommend making this excursion by car, but we do organise group excursions.

  • “Capitulation 1945” Memorial Room – Spominska soba “Kapitulacija 1945” in Topolsica (in the near vicinity of the spa):
At the end of World War II, Topolsica witnessed an important event: On 9 May 1945, Alexander Loehl, Commandant of the E Group of armed forces and Commandant for the Southeast, signed an agreement on surrendering his units – the unconditional capitulation of the German armed forces for Southeastern Europe. The memorial room is dedicated to this event.

  • Bahor Pottery – Loncarstvo Bahor – unique ceramics and pottery (in the near vicinity of the spa:
Among the articles at the Bahor Pottery, ethnological collections of pottery are predominant – authentic reproductions of the earthenware found in typical Slovenian households (baking, cooking, storage, serving and drinking ware, etc.). The branded article of the Bahor Pottery is the earthen “apple baking tray” and you will be impressed by the lovely majolicas, jugs, “cottage cheese colanders”, herb containers, whistles, Christmas cribs and similar, including some modern practical articles created under skilful hands on a pottery wheel. It is always worthwhile seeing a potter working and at the Bahor Pottery in Topolsica you will have a chance to see pots being made by traditional hand “throwing”.

  • St. Jacob’s Church – Cerkev Sv. Jakoba (1.5-km walk on well-kept circular trail, 20 minutes):
The first records on St. Jacob’s Church go back to 1545. The presbytery was built at the beginning of the 18th century, while the furniture was mostly made by Joze Vrenk in 1865. In 1631 the church had three altars: St. Jacob’s, St. Urban’s (on the Evangelical side) and St. Philip and Jacob’s altars. It was built in the Gothic style and only the presbytery is vaulted. In 1860 the church was furnished with two new side altars; the one on the Evangelical side is dedicated to St. Catherine and the one on the opposite side to St. Urban. The pulpit was erected in 1864 and the old organs are from 1872. The wall paintings date back to 1894, but after 30 years they were restored from the floor to the windows. In that period the exterior walls of the church and the tower were repainted. Until 1909 the church had two bells: one from 1843 and the other from 1844. During World War I the former was used for the production of cannons, while the latter has been preserved. Since 1921 the belfry has again featured two bells.

  • Vrzisnik Farm – Kmetija Vrzisnik – tourist farm (6-km walk, 3 hours):
At the Vrzisnik tourist farm, fresh homemade specialties are served!

  • Sostanj
This is the ancient centre of the valley of Saleska dolina with a rich cultural heritage. Today it has 2,750 inhabitants. The place was first mentioned in 1199; when it developed into a market town in 1348, it was granted “borough rights”. On the hill above the town are the remains of the Pusti Grad Castle, first mentioned in 1473. There is the interesting church of St. Mohor and Fortunat, where the fragments of frescos from the 14th century have been preserved. In the vicinity is a new parish church of St. Michael, whose altar was renovated in 1748. The town also features the birthplace of the poet Karel Destovnik-Kajuh (where the trading centre of Kajuhov Dom currently stands), the permanent gallery of the sculptor Ivan Napotnik in the Cultural Centre and the Mayer Villa, where artists from Saleska dolina exhibit their works.

In Sostanj you can find: post office, bus station, railway station, petrol station, bank, outpatient clinic, pharmacy, cultural centre with cinema, two primary schools, library, sports facilities with various courts and grounds, gymnasiums, outdoor swimming pool, many bars, restaurants and shops, fishing centre near the lake and the Vila Siroko Inn in forest surroundings. The leather and timber industries developed in Sostanj in the past, and there is also a thermal power plant and a great number of small craftsmen and entrepreneurs. The rural hinterland is characterised by agriculture and the working class; since World War II it has depended economically on the city of Velenje. Today Sostanj is again an independent municipality (8,100 inhabitants) to which the resort of Topolsica belongs.

The major portion of equipment is stored in the new church, which was built in 1974 at the entrance to the Penk Gorge. The most important preserved items of equipment of the old church include the main altar from 1748.
