Zgodovina

The thermal spring “Toplice” in Topolsica was famous already in the 16th century; in 1617 and 1623 Tomaz Hren, Bishop of Ljubljana, expressed his enthusiasm about it. In 1838 the spa was open to the public, but the thermal spring was not used for healing purposes until some six decades later. At that time, the first buildings were erected for seasonal guests. At the turn of the century, the physical & dietary spa in Topolšica was ready to start providing its professional services.

In his Memoirs (1905), Josip Vosnjak documented the vibrant life in Topolšica with the following words:

“Even ordinary visitors can no longer bathe for three copper coins. The idyll of yesterday, when strong-flavoured dishes were served with simplicity, had to give way to a modern spa for modern neurasthenic guests. Men and women, tired of their metropolitan lives, flock to the sandy trails of the spa barefoot, roast themselves under the sun and sleep in open air huts, only to mend their tattered senses at least until the next season.”

The history of the Topolsica spa and the results of the hospital in the eighties of the previous century paved the way for the development of the present modern spa, tourist, recreation and catering centre offering high-quality hotel accommodation.
